Filmmaker Dave Boyle’s indie romance “Daylight Savings” leads this year’s National Film Society Awards race with 3 nominations for actors Goh Nakamura, Yea-Ming Chen and Michael Idemoto. Boyle’s previous film “Surrogate Valentine” nearly swept last year’s NFS Awards, winning Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Picture. The only Barrel Man statuette “Surrogate” failed to take home went to NFS favorite Ryan Gosling for his smoldering leading role in Drive.

The Dante Basco and KevJumba charming buddy comedy “Hang Loose,” PT Anderson’s latest inscrutable film “The Master,” and Michael Mohan’s Sundance rom-com “Save the Date” each scored 2 nominations.

Looking to build on the success of last year’s awards show, we’ve added two new categories this year for “Best Duo” and “Best Documentary.” This is part of our ongoing push to have the National Film Society become a serious player come awards season. Who knows, maybe Hollywood will actually start sending us DVD screeners next year? That would be awesome.

Fans have begun voting for their favorite nominees on YouTube, and so far Best Supporting Actress nominee Michelle Krusiec has been dominating all voting with the help of her loyal fans. Michelle’s heavy campaigning via Facebook and Twitter looks like it might lead to her first Barrel Man win.
